Mother-in-law Blues [May. 20th, 2010|12:55 pm]
No this is not blues about having problems with my Mother-In-Law, but about missing her badly. auntiematter and I will be at her internment tomorrow, but the memorial service is on Sunday.

I feel very isolated here in SoCal wrapped up in grief and relief for her passing and release from her pain.

Just heard from my sister and niece, they are coming from the Sacramento area to attend the memorial.

SWA has just canceled my flight for the FOURTH time. I know that I will never get to California again. Something will always intervene. I HATE snow. I know this sounds like whining but this is the thing that I look forward to for the whole year. The only time I get to see so many friends and family. I HATE snow. And since this year auntiematter is in CA, I feel cut off from everything. I HATE snow.

Writer's Block: Single pride day [Feb. 8th, 2010|04:12 pm]
[Tags|]

Given that we're less than a week out from Valentines, how do you feel about the approaching holiday? Will you participate or abstain? If you're not in a relationship, how will you celebrate your single status?

View 1785 Answers

When I was single, I hated Valentines day.
Since I and auntiematter got together, it has been generally not important since it was always seemed to be something of a side event during PantheaCon.
Since our wedding anniversary is Feb 26, thats when we celebrate. It was also my grandmother's birthday and is a moment of remembrance for her.

Groundhog Day [Feb. 2nd, 2010|07:52 am]
Well, everyone bailed for Brigid's Day. Darn. I miss the ringing of hammer on anvil, the smell of forge and candle, and most of all the reflections in a well. I will have to see if we retained our copy of the Carmina Gaedelica and read some old prayers to Brigid.

Brigid's Day [Jan. 29th, 2010|07:04 am]
auntiemater and I will be hosting a Brigid celebration at our house on monday evening. This is the time of year that I feel most hopeful and most fearful.

Brigid has been the most important spiritual motivator for me for about 20 years now. I don't care if She is all in my mind, the inspiration that I feel working with Her is real. The bright, strong, wise and cheerful woman's image She shows me has made me look for and nurture those qualities in all women (and girls) I meet.

I hope we get a good turnout on monday.

Going through family history. [Feb. 20th, 2009|06:38 pm]
Mom, my brother Paul and my sister Alicia are attempting to reorganize the stuff in the garage. I think a may have a permanent case of dust poisoning. Not really, but Psudofed has been my friend today, mostly. I'm now tired and somewhat ill.

Earlier, we found some family pictures from way, way back. The stuff you show to your sibling's friends as blackmail. My sister is taking them to scan.

Cleaning up Mom's House [Feb. 19th, 2009|08:40 pm]
[Current Location |Mom's Home]
[Disposition |moodymoody]

The funeral was nice and more that 250 people showed up. I have been tearing up occasionally ever since.

We are in the process of sorting out Dad's stuff. I claimed his Knights of Columbus regalia and his Air Force uniform. By some miracle, his dress shoes fit me. It is really weird to think that I literally can step into his shoes.

We will be shipping my share of Dad's stuff tomorrow via UPS Ground. I will be taking two fly fishing rods and three reels. I fully intend to go fly fishing with auntiematter this summer. My youngest sister is having a very hard time and I wish I could do more for her.

I spent last night at Mom's visiting with my dad's brothers. I had not seen any of them since my grandmother's funeral in 2004. It turns out that Uncle Bob is a Dr. Who fan. I really need to visit all of them more often.

Stuck in the Oakland Airport [Feb. 17th, 2009|09:29 am]

[Tune in my head |Airport MUZAK]

Well I dropped auntiematter off at the Southwest departures gate, go into Alameda to get gas for the rental car, drop off the rental car, take the shuttle to the Southwest terminal and attempt to check my bag. Of course no luck. The flight leaves at 11:00 PST and it is 5:30 PST. They wont accept bagage more that 4 hours before the flight. So I am stuck OUTSIDE the secure zone where there are almost no services. Fortunately the kind lady in the news stand let me in before actually opening her kiosk and let me buy some trail mix. But no coffee people yet.

Oakland now has "Free" (as in advertisement driven) WiFi. It seems to work OK after getting past the terms of service screen and the advertisements. So this is how I am posting stuff.

I will get into Oklahoma City about 21:20 CST. But at least I will be able to have breakfast here at Oakland and perhaps dinner in Dallas.

Spent a wonderful time at the "Feri Tent Revival" ritual last night. I hope that someone has a script that can be shared. It was powerful, moving and funny all at the same time.

Many people were expressing their condolences all yesterday. It is good to have this level of support so far from home.

I will be going to Oklahoma City instead of Baltimore tomorrow. auntiematter managed to change my ticket for $50. I don't know exactly when I can come home from there. My father's funeral is on Wednesday. But I really need to get back to work as soon as possible.

I picked up a copy of "Thorns of the Blood Rose" from Victor Anderson. I intend to give this to drinkerofhate the next time we meet at the Unitarian. She really liked his other book of poetry "Lilith's Garden".

Well its almost time to pack up to check out of the hotel. freydis left two hours ago to catch her flight.

Sharon, Winter & Thorne were all fantastic in concert. One of their pieces involved Anaar invoking a Feri circle in dance. Graceful, sensual & powerful. Bought the chant CD by Sharon & Thorne. They played several pieces from that last night.

I met up with some of my Feri friends and will try to get together for serious discussions today and tomorrow.

I also hung around the Tech room, catching up with my friends there.

Still no news about Dad. I will have to call Mom later this morning.

Otherwise my holiday plans are pretty scrambled. auntiematter and I are going to see the grandchildren for the first time in 2 years on Xmas day. Spent an hour at the Mall trying to find toys for Shane. Not only are there no toy stores at the Mall, but the anchor stores do not have toy departments. Ended up at Toy's R Us, picked up some standards; Legos and Tinkertoys. Things that we can play with.

Spent all day with Mom.

First we went to the hospital and visited with Dad. He was in pretty bad pain and had not slept last night. They did an X-ray and decided to open him up. They found a large tumor blocking the colon, and many small tumors all around. They bypassed the blocked section, but did not remove the large tumor mass. He is now on heavy pain meds recovering from the surgery. I will be able to talk to him again tomorrow.

Glowstops [Nov. 15th, 2008|11:33 pm]
About 8 months ago my company received a batch of ATX power supplies with blue LED's around the fan. These had the bad habit of behaving badly in the field after being bench tested for days at the shop. Since these were the only power supplies that had lights in them, I nicknamed them "Glowstop". The name stuck in the shop. We sent the ones that failed back for replacements and they again seemed to work while in the shop, but fail strangely in the field. Today I had to make a field call to replace what I hope is the last one. My coworker was so frustrated that when one of the failed ones returned, he jumped on it until it was completely crushed.

Weekend Stuff [Oct. 20th, 2008|02:38 pm]
[Disposition |sleepysleepy]

Was home alone for the weekend. auntiematter and freydis were at the Winternights gathering, but I needed to work.

As the main religious education track for the Youth at First Unitarian, I have been running a Hero System based role playing game. The plots for the adventures are based on the UU Seven Principles.

The premise for the game is as follows: The youth are writing themselves up as "Talented Normals" based on 35 points. The superheros (and there are superheros) in this game start out based on 250 points. The player characters are not allowed to have any powers, and can only have appropriate skills.

I have a lot of enthusiasm from many of the Youth, some disinterest, and some outright hostility. It is real challenge to ride herd on 8 to 10 teenagers as player characters and herd them through a plot.

Anyway I still need to work on the plot for the current adventure, it is probably too complicated to be picked up easily by the players.
